Results From the Endoscopy

The pathologist wrote, “no definitive areas of… invasive malignancy are seen.”  What we wrongly assumed was 1-2 cm of tumor was either dead cancer or Barrett’s esophagus tissue.  Lesson to self, again, do not make assumptions good or bad when dealing with cancer until all the facts are known.  Needless to say we are thrilled with the news.  However, the biopsies only came from the inside of his esophagus, it could still be hiding inside the wall of or outside of his esophagus.  So, here is our chemo/testing plan.

Jim only has 1 or 2 more rounds of Epirubicin he can take.  It’s the one that was supposed to makes his hair fall out.  He can’t take any more of it because it will permanently damage his heart.  That leaves us with the Oxaliplatin (causes neuropathy and it’s the one he’s allergic to) and Xeloda pills (causes his feet to peel and nails to warp).  Jim will continue his normal rounds through the holidays, and then he will have a CT and PET scan in February or March.  That should tell us whether there is any detectable cancer left.  Hopefully, at that time, we can make the difficult decision on how to continue his chemo treatments.
