Surgery went very well, but Jim is “oozy”

Jim did great.  The surgery lasted about 5 hours.  The surgeon tested his liver and a neck lymph node for cancer and they both came back negative.  The resectioning of his stomach to the top of his esophagus, which has no Barrett’s Esophagus in it, went very well.  The incision on his neck is lower than I thought, and looks pretty good, so Jim will be happy about that too.

The only problem Jim has is that he is “oozy.”  The chemo not only lowered his platelet counts, but apparently his platelets aren’t behaving like normal platelets.  He had several platelet transfusions during surgery and will probably have more, plus regular blood transfusions.  They also had to add a draining tube to his chest.  Because of all this, the doctor is keeping him in ICU through the weekend and moved the hospital stay from 10 days to 14.  Jim’s dad asked how big a problem this was, and Dr. Johnson said on a scale of 1-10, it’s a 4.  I take that as a real, but controllable problem to carefully watch.

Jim was great while he was waking up after surgery.  He would squeeze our hands when he realized we were there.  I’ve always heard how bad it is when the intubation tube is removed, so I stuck around to hold Jim’s hand.  Didn’t look like fun, but Jim handled it really well.  The nurses kept thanking him for being so calm.

I left around 7:00 to pick up Sarah.   Justin, Jim’s little brother, stayed with Jim last night.  (The ICU is great.  Two people in the room at any time – no closed hours, and Jim has his own giant room.)  Apparently, Jim’s biggest problem last night was a very painful back, but they took care of that pretty quickly.
